Students kicked off campus for wearing American flag t-shirts

On Wednesday four students in California were required to leave school for wearing offensive clothing. The design on the clothes was an American flag. Reasoning for the action by the school was that on May 5th, the Mexican holiday of Cinco de Mayo, American flags may seem offensive to Mexicans.

To me this is pretty simple. These Mexicans have made a choice to be in the US. Their being offended by the simple act of donning an American flag is not a poor reflection on the citizens wearing the cloths. I believe the Mexicans, in being offended, are affirming their own ignorance in making the poor choice to live in a country (the US) that they are not proud of and do not understand. The American’s wearing the flag are not offenders.

America has its foundations in liberty but free speech and free expression are constantly under attack. What’s distressing is that something so obviously non-offensive to our citizenry would be in the cross-hairs.

Cinco de Mayo should be a day to lift Mexico and Mexican American’s up. Paying tribute and giving respect to one country does not require one to muffle the pride another feels about his own.
